Having driven over 500 000kms of dirt and rough gravel roads in Africa, as well as driving off road up hills and through bush etc with no roads or tracks, I watched this with interest as I have a 2004 Discovery 2 Td5. The issue here with your video is that its not a true comparison and does not offer the true abilities of the D2 or D3 against the D4. It would be better to test like for like, D2 td5 vs D3 tdv6 2.7 vs D4 tdv6 3.0... all should either be auto or manual, all fitted with same tyres/tread patterns. Also I noted that in the loose rock climb the D4 never stopped, and in the sand dune all vehicle should be limited to the same gear and with the same tyre pressures, plus all should be limited to the same start and max speed as the D4 carried considerably more speed into the climb, which in itself was an unfair advantage. Therefore I have to say that I think this video is biased in favour of the D4.

The lr3 and lr4 did surpringly well on the technical sections. The lr3 had terrible tires, that's probably the main cause of it coming in third. The lr4 had the best tires by far. I would expect the lr3 and LR4 to perform pretty much identical If they had equal tires.

In the sand , the 76 land cruiser only bogged down due to 40psi tyre pressure , if it had been significantly lower , like the old defender and the hummer h3 , it would have sailed through . Stop bullshitting everyone electronics is the answer , it is not , I own a Range Rover (full size) and as it gets older , the electronics get unreliable (refering to the new superduper eletronic kid on the block with 100 ecu's to drive it and over 3000 sensors to work it ) I have owned many pre 2015 defenders , went to a Land Cruiser , decided to try a Range Rover and next buy is a 70 series Land Cruiser . Truth be told , new electonic cars are shit .

Clearly the 76 series had broken its front locker and it had not been fixed , it is common for people to not turn off their front lockers directly after using them , that actually causes the lockers to shear and the front axle needs to be replaced , the vehicle will in this state be capable of much of its offroad ability as not to leave you stranded , something that can NOT BE SAID FOR LAND ROVER PRODUCTS , the newer the worse it is with LR/RR products .

A VERY SMALL detail the narrator does not know , the Land Cruiser 76 is equipped with 3 diff locks , when moving from 2wd to 4wd high , the central diff lock is automatically engaved , this is a viscous slip diff , the same as the early defender , then it has a STANDARD rear diff lock and then it has a STANDARD FRONT DIFF LOCK !

They never tested the off-road version of the CX-5. Also, Mazda states the CX-5 is not meant for serious off-road operation. The newer CX-50 with off-road software apparently is the best they offer now, but they never tested it. Amazing to me is the Mazda with only a 6 speed automatic and technology dating back to 2012 still got the best gas consumption of these four cars. Sometimes old tech with an engine is the most economical apparently.
